Guided group hiking on Solheimajokull glacier in Iceland

Glacier Hike vs Ice Cave Experience: Which Iceland Adventure to Book

Walking on a glacier and stepping inside an ice cave are two very different Iceland experiences, and one of them depends heavily on the season. Here is how to choose.

Published: 25 July 2026

Two of Iceland's most tempting "ice" experiences sound interchangeable but are not: a glacier hike outdoors on a real glacier, and an ice cave experience. The right choice depends on how active you want to be, what season you are visiting in, and how much you want to leave to the weather.

The glacier hike

A guided glacier hike puts crampons on your feet and takes you out onto a living glacier, typically Solheimajokull on the South Coast. You walk among crevasses, ridges and ice formations with a certified guide, usually as part of a longer day that also takes in waterfalls and a black sand beach. It is genuinely active, memorable, and available year-round because the guides pick safe routes on the glacier surface.

A glacier hike day including South Coast waterfalls and black sand starts from £142. It is the pricier option, but you get a full adventure day, not just a single stop.

The honest caveat: it involves real walking on uneven ice, so it is not ideal for very young children or anyone with mobility issues. Weather can also shorten or move the route.

The ice cave experience

Natural blue ice caves are one of Iceland's most photographed sights, but they are strictly seasonal, typically only safe to enter in winter, roughly November to March, when the ice is stable. Outside those months, natural ice caves close for safety.

If you are visiting outside winter, or you want a guaranteed, weather-proof way to stand inside an ice cave and learn how Iceland's glaciers and volcanoes work, Perlan's Wonders of Iceland in Reykjavik features a real, walk-through ice cave built from hundreds of tonnes of snow, alongside its glacier and volcano exhibits. It is indoors, family-friendly, never cancels for weather, and starts from just £43.

Which to book

Book the glacier hike if: you want a proper active adventure outdoors, you are reasonably mobile, and you want a full day of South Coast scenery around it. Available year-round.

Book the Perlan ice cave experience if: you are visiting outside winter, you have young children, you want a guaranteed weather-proof indoor option, or you simply want the ice-cave photo without a strenuous day out, all for a much lower price.

The verdict

These are not really rivals, they are for different trips. If you are fit, adventurous and here for the landscapes, the glacier hike is the standout. If you are visiting in summer, travelling with kids, or want a reliable, low-cost, weather-proof ice experience in the city, Perlan is the sensible pick. Many visitors happily do both: Perlan on a rainy afternoon in Reykjavik, and a glacier hike on a clear South Coast day.
